Liverpool 3 - 0 West Ham

As far as deputies go, I am happy with the contribution of Ngog this season. On one hand I could point to the 6 goals I scored tonight in my five-a-side game (including a lob ;) ) and claim that Ngog could be doing a lot more given that he's a professional n all that. But given the pressure the lad is under, given that he's still 12 years my junior and still learning about the game, I think he has made admirable progress.

Tonight's game was indeed about deputies. Kyrgiakos was bought as an afterthought and impressed the Kop with committed performances at both ends of the field, worrying less about his reputation and hair, and more about the team. Ryan Babel's 15 minute cameo demonstrated good movement and touch, and Agger continues to do a decent job at left-back.

However, I did wonder about Steven Gerrard's deputy. After an encouraging performance from the skipper he was withdrawn on 70 minutes for...Mascherano. As the game and further substitutions unfolded (Babel and Degen on) you can see that it was to provide cover for players who can easily get caught out of position. But I did wonder why Alberto Aquilani didn't make an appearance.

At 3-0 up I'm sure everyone expected to seee the dashing locks and adventurous passing of our Italian, but it wasn't to be. He has admitted to rushing back from injuries, but after an energetic performance against Fulham this man needs match practice. You can't stop-start and expect to play well in the big games and this man might be crucial in the run-in - he certainly has the talent. Yossi Benayoun has kept his place in recent games despite some very average performances since returning from injury and yet tonight he was beginning to flourish again.

And can I just say - if Maxi maintains this level of performance next year when there is no World Cup to play for, he is going to be a very good piece of business indeed. Effort, movement, imagination, great linking up. Kuyt finally has a deputy to be threatened by.
